Khyri Thornton hungry to make an impact, earn spot on defensive line - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Green Bay — For Khyri Thornton, this is it. He seems to grasp that reality. The Green Bay Packers defensive lineman will be in a fight for his football life when training camp begins next month. "It's as big as it's going to get," Thornton said. "I have to show up and do what I've got to do. ". A third-round pick out of Southern Miss, the 6-foot-2½, 305-pounder was mostly overwhelmed through his first camp — undrafted teammates Mike Pennel and since-cut Luther Robinson were far more... Yet a late hamstring injury allowed the team to stash Thornton on injured reserve, hit reset and try it all over again this summer. Thornton says he recommitted himself to the weight room and has the right mind-set this time around. This off-season, the team re-signed two veteran nose tackles (B. J. Raji, Letroy Guion) and drafted a Mike Daniels Lite (Christian Ringo). At a crowded position, Thornton will be gone if he doesn't improve. Up to 315 pounds — more muscle, less fat — Thornton is well aware of the stakes. "Be accountable for everything you do," he said, when asked what he learned. "They're not going to hold your hand. Basically, you're not being pampered, you're not being babied, you're not being watched. Of course, this draft pick took many by surprise a year ago. With the 85th overall selection, general manager Ted Thompson rolled the dice on Thornton as the eighth inside pass rusher off the board. At Southern Miss, he finished with 39 tackles and a half-sack as a senior, but impressed scouts at the NFL scouting combine with a time of 5. 03 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 28 reps on the bench press. Quickly, Thornton realized in training camp he was undersized. Whereas defensive linemen from the SEC, he explained, face NFL-type bodies each Saturday, he rarely did in Conference USA. At his locker after practice, Thornton pointed to a reporter and said everybody in his conference was "his size. "I had to get that mind-set that people being bigger than you doesn't mean anything," Thornton said. So I look at it that I want to put the weight on so I can contribute, but I have to carry the weight that I put on. It's not bad weight. Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac saw some promising signs in practice late in camp last season, footage he's showing Thornton now to reinforce good habits. Into this camp, Trgovac will be giving all defensive linemen a fair share of reps, too, so Thornton doesn't necessarily feel overcome with do-or-die pressure. "It's on me," he said. Before last year, Thornton hadn't missed a game of football since the finale of his redshirt freshman year. He said he tried to take it all as a positive and view it as a "redshirt" season, a chance to learn from the likes of Daniels and Guion. Green Bay's defensive line doesn't completely hinge on Thornton's development, but the team will want more out of a third-round investment. Coming into the pros, Thornton said he was "naturally gifted" with a strong "punch. " Excelling against 330-pound counterparts, however, takes more than raw ability. "I didn't work on things (in college)," Thornton said. "But when you get here, you've got to work on everyday things like hand placement, how you do punch, keep your hands above your eyes, take this right step because if you don't you'll leave a gap this wide and they'll hit you for 90 yards. Now, Thornton claims he's stronger than he ever was in college — his bench press, squat and power clean numbers are all at an all-time high. Thornton stayed in Green Bay through the entire 2014 season and once OTAs and minicamp wrap up, he plans on staying in town until training camp, too. "I feel like I'm lagging behind," Thornton said. "I want to stay here when everybody's home and try to get that extra work in so I can get on the field and make an impact. I'm here on the weekends, I'm here early, I'm here late. I'm here on my days late. This must all be music to the Packers' ears after a lost season. When the pads come on, they'll need to see this all transfer. "I mean, we'll just have to wait until camp to see," Thornton said. "Everybody gets the opportunity to play but you'll have to wait 'til camp to see.
