Marin Headlands adventures offer a walk on the wild side - San Jose Mercury News

Looking out at the Golden Gate Bridge from Battery Kirby on the Marin Headlands, I watch as the fog pours through and blankets the coast. This is a land with a storied past, once occupied by Coast Miwoks, Spanish vaqueros, lighthouse keepers and the soldiers who protected this coast. Their histories remain, ready to be explored along with a wilderness area of rolling hills, rugged cliffs, pebbled beaches and panoramic views. The headlands are a place where raptors soar, harbor seals swim and intrepid hikers roam its 50-plus miles of trails. This stretch of land, which encompasses the rugged southernmost end of Marin County, is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Broad in vision and rich in recreational possibilities, the headlands are a repeat destination in my book. The only things lacking are gourmet resources, so I'm back on this misty afternoon, picnic hamper full, to revisit favorites and find an ideal picnic spot to savor it all. The best place to start a Marin Headlands foray is at the visitors center, housed in Fort Barry's former military chapel, where natural and human history exhibits stimulate the senses and put the headlands in perspective. Here, you can listen to tales of Miwok culture inside a reed shelter, read a lighthouse keeper's log and check out a soldier's cramped quarters, with a soundtrack of marching boots. You'll find field guides, park maps and a daily schedule of interpretive activities here as well. The Point Bonita Lighthouse stands guard on a promontory, where an 1850s cottage-style dwelling sits next to a 56-foot tower housing the Fresnel lens. The lens's 125 lead glass prisms extend the light's visibility 18 miles out to sea. The steep, half-mile walk to the point includes a hewn-rock tunnel that conjures up trolls, at least to the more fanciful among us -- and a 132-foot suspension bridge connects the bluff and the point. The vistas north and south along the rugged coast are postcard-beautiful, as is peaceful Bonita Cove, where a park bench offers a perfect perch from which to enjoy a deli sandwich or perhaps a thermos of coffee and a scone. One of my new favorite picnic spots is Black Sands Beach, which is between Point Bonita and Kirby Cove. It's reached by clambering down a three-quarter-mile stretch of steps, staircases and a path adorned by the occasional lizard and bordered by thick brush and flowers. The reward is a quiet, serene stretch of black-sand beach where you can dip your toes in the chilly water, watch boats pass by, gaze at the famous bridge and unpack a light backpack-size lunch -- baguettes, cheese, fresh berries and, perhaps, some... On the northward, Pacific side of Point Bonita, Rodeo Beach is popular with kite fliers, beachcombers, dogs and surfers alike. There's no sand here, but rather a colorful blend of tiny pebbles with jade, black agate, jasper and more. The beach is easily accessible across a wooden bridge, and with parking nearby, it's a lovely place for a full-on hamper or cooler picnic with all the fixings. Enjoy your repast as birds flutter by to Bird Island and surfers catch the waves. Then take the easy one-mile walk around Rodeo Lagoon, where you can spot brown pelicans, snowy egrets, great blue herons and cormorants, their wings spread in the sunlight. We may think of this Golden Gate National Recreation Area as a peaceful place, but its coastal batteries testify to times of war. These were once home to soldiers, rifles and mortars, placed to prevent hostile ships from entering the bay. The faded green paint of Battery Mendell's assorted structures look out to sea, while Battery 129 resembles a concrete amphitheater awaiting a concert. They're excellent for exploring and finding a lookout ledge from which to sit, take in the views and consider their one-time residents. You'll find a Cold War museum on these bluffs as well. One of 300 Nike missile batteries built from 1953 to 1979, Marin's Nike Missile Site SF-88 is the nation's only restored Nike site. A monthly open house offers a chance to chat with restoration volunteers and Nike veterans. The park's one official picnic area sits next to built-into-the-hillside Battery Wallace, offering four tables, grills and amazing views. It's a popular spot with the barbecued chicken and grilled corn crowd, so stake out your spot early. At Hawk Hill, the fall raptor count can reach 2,800 birds, making it a haven for bird-watchers as well as the hawks they adore. The Marine Mammal Center, where injured or abandoned.
